India-based Kiran Gems Private Ltd said it had cut and polished 5.3 million carats of rough diamonds in fiscal year 2013-2014.
Dinesh Lakhani, director of Kiran Gems, attributed the production growth to increased demand from existing and new clients.
The manufacturer has 155 specialised factories – 11 of which were recent additions – that use the latest technology that enables the company to plan each stone that comes into production. A new factory with 400,000 square feet of space is now under construction, and is planned to be in operation by the end of 2016, the company added.
Kiran Gems receives a regular supply of rough from De Beers, Alrosa and Dominion among others.
Production in the 1-carat-plus category and smaller stones has significantly increased to meet the demand for certified diamonds and parcels, Kiran Gems said, adding that production of medium-sized goods recorded a moderate increase.
Kiran Gems exported polished goods and diamond jewellery to 39 countries in the last financial year. Currently, it cuts and polishes approximately 5 percent of global rough production by volume, the company said.
